So what is burnout?

Burnout is known as an ‘occupational syndrome’. If you are burning out, then you are probably tired or even exhausted throughout much of your day, and you may feel a sense of detachment or negativity about work.

And you’re finding it much harder now to be the high achiever that you are known as.

It’s important to know that burnout is not your fault.

There are larger forces in our society that drive most peoples’ tendency to:

  • overwork;
  • tolerate poor behaviour from the people around you;
  • cut corners in the name of efficiency;
  • accept unhealthy work conditions (including pay); and
  • suffer isolation and a lack of clear information and support.

But you can empower yourself to be resilient - not just to keep soldiering on through poor work conditions, but to do something real to make your situation better.

And you have more power than you realise to make the small, yet significant changes you need.

And burnout is more than just a work challenge.

Your home life and relationships can also contribute to burnout. Your many roles - spouse, parent, relative, supporter, and volunteer all place demands on you. Especially if there is dependency, conflict, or loss.

And the challenges of debt, life transitions, sickness and disability, and legal issues can create further strain.

The hidden mindset factors driving burnout

Our busy lives can also mask our deep, hidden drivers of burnout - mental habits such as:

  • Perfectionism,
  • Over-responsibility,
  • Avoidance of difficult experiences,
  • Self-criticism, and
  • Lack of assertiveness, which can keep us stuck in unconscious patterns of over-work.

These internal drivers of burnout can be identified and changed, with good information, gentle support and encouragement.

 And this fascinating inner-journey begins with understanding the way we react to stress, the important impacts on our behaviours and choices, and what we must do about it in order to stop burnout

Why you must
stop burnout now

- even if you’re not burning out (yet)

Our culture drives widespread burnout and your work puts you at great risk of burning out.

So you must take action now.

Because unless you’re proactively using resilience and assertiveness strategies, you’re probably on the path to burnout. Even if you don’t have any signs or symptoms of burnout yet.

Put simply, a proactive focus on your energy and wellness can protect you from burnout in the future.

And if you are starting to feel the burn, the sooner you take action to recover, the faster and easier it is to make progress.

Leaving burnout to fester for too long can result in illness, misery, and being unable to work.

Burnout usually begins outside our awareness, where it subtly takes hold in our body and mind and erodes our ability to stop it.

Burnout eats at our energy, confidence, and wellness. And it won’t stop until we change.

Testimonials

Towards the end of 2023 I completed Burnout and Emotional Mastery sessions with Toni and a colleague. After the 5 sessions I was able to highlight a number of contributing factors of burnout, and particular strategies to support myself. … As an OT, I can’t recommend Toni enough for her skill and experience in providing tangible resources to improve, in a demanding industry. Toni listens with complete empathy, understanding and created a safe space to discuss our experiences. Thank you again, Toni. These skills have equipped me for a long career ahead.
